User-friendly TitraLab 840 helps IBS Stahmer provide process analysis in biogas plants

IBS Stahmer Engineering, based in Bremen, Germany has been in existence since the beginning of 2004. In addition to acting as consultants for biogas plant operators, the firm runs its own laboratory to help it provide optimum advice for its customers on process analysis.

Engineer Lars Stahmer explains: “the degradation process in a biogas plant takes place in a sensitive (micro)biological system. High gas yield and a properly decomposed fermentation product that can be exploited for agricultural purposes can only be obtained by a biogas plant operator if ideal boundary conditions are respected.“

“IBS has been using a complete measuring system from HACH LANGE to control these boundary conditions for some time now. We also perform the photometric analysis of more than 100 fermentation samples a week for ammonium nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand and total organic acids.“

IBS purchased a TitraLab 840 in order to test buffer capacity in a fermenter. The relationship between organic acids and buffer capacity is an important factor in a biogas plant. With the TitraLab 840, analyses can be performed at the press of a button. “I particularly appreciate the simple, menu-driven operation and the fact that you can follow the progress of titration on the graphic display.“

“We deal with a sample matrix that is both inhomogeneous and complex, so we need to be able to perform analysis without expensive and time-consuming sample preparation in order to obtain fast, accurate and reproducible results.”
